Kentucky Mudworks Clay
***Recommended clays for beginner throwing... Iceman with Grog (FYI- it does have a bit of a sandy feeling) or Dark Star.
***Speckled Turtle - we have determined that Speckled Turtle is not a good clay for beginner wheel throwing. Please start with Iceman!
Choose from the following Cone 5/6 wet clays.
KMW Iceman - Fires to a light grey/off white. Great for hand-building and throwing.
Absorption ^6: less than 0.5%; Shrinkage 11%
KMW Dark Star - Iceman with dark speckles of manganese.
Absorption ^6: 0.5%; Shrinkage 11.0% (+/- .25%)
KMW Iceman with Grog - Iceman with 6% added grog for increased tooth. More forgiving than standard Iceman great for larger throwing projects and hand building. Has a little more "structure" or texture.
Absorption ^6: less than 0.5%; Shrinkage 11%
KMW Tony Beaver - A very plastic, bright-buff color clay body that performs well for wheel throwing AND hand building. Absorption ^6: less than 0.5%; Shrinkage 13%
KMW Speckled Turtle - Fires to a warm light brown shade with dark speckles of manganese. Absorption ^6: less than 0.5%; Shrinkage 11.5%
KMW Kota Porcelain - Fires to a clean white shade, brightens glazes.
Absorption ^6: 0%; Shrinkage 13%
KMW Brown Bear - Fires to dark chocolate brown, almost black.
Absorption ^6: less than 0.5%; Shrinkage 15%
KMW Speckled Brown Bear - Brown Bear with glistening speckles of manganese. Absorption ^6: less than 0.5%; Shrinkage 15%
***All of our KMW clays can be merged together except for Kota. Merge only two clays at a time. Three or more tends to invite more chance of cracking.
Price of each bag is figured to include the retail price of clay as well as offsetting a portion of the cost of glazes available in the studio, electricity used in firings, and kiln maintenance.
