Ready to take your air pen skills to the next level?

If you've already learned the basics of using an air pen, this workshop is designed to help you move beyond simple texture and begin using it as a true artistic design tool.

Together, we'll explore techniques that add richness, movement, and intention to your surfaces. You'll learn how to create more sophisticated designs through layering, depth, pattern development, composition, and the thoughtful combination of techniques to create intentional, expressive surfaces.

In This Workshop You'll Explore

• Layering patterns to create depth and visual interest
• Building intentional compositions rather than random textures
• Varying line weight, spacing, and rhythm
• Combining multiple air pen techniques for richer surfaces
• Using colored slip and underglaze with the air pen
• Properly thinning slip for use in the air pen cartridge
• Creating surfaces that complement the form instead of simply decorating it

This class focuses on concepts rather than a single project, giving you techniques you can apply to many different forms in the future.

Prerequisite

This workshop is open to everyone.

You'll need to bring your own air pen to participate in this workshop. If you have already taken our Introduction to the AirPen® class, you're ready to jump right in.

If you have not taken the introductory class, you'll need to watch the recorded Introduction to the AirPen® lesson available in our Communities group before attending. The workshop builds on the concepts covered in that video.

If you'd like hands-on help setting up your air pen, you're welcome to arrive at 12:30 PM for setup assistance. Please let me know ahead of time if you plan to come early.

What to Bring

Please bring:

• AirPen® of course😎
• 2 flat tiles in soft to medium leather hard greenware
• 2 vertical forms (such as mugs or tumblers) in soft to medium leather hard greenware
• At least 2 colors of colored slip
• Thin round paint brushes
• Optional: 1 color of underglaze (black works especially well, and we have it available for purchase in the studio at this link Amaco Velvet Underglaze) You can also use a third slip color.😎

During class, I'll demonstrate how to properly thin colored slip so it flows smoothly through the air pen cartridge and produces consistent results.

Whether your style is botanical, geometric, whimsical, or inspired by nature, you'll leave with new techniques and a deeper understanding of how thoughtful surface design can elevate your work.
