Art Journaling for Potters (Monthly Series)

Art Journaling for Potters is a monthly, process-driven class that supports ceramic artists in developing a stronger visual voice through 2D exploration. Working with watercolors, sketching, and a dedicated painting journal, each session focuses on a distinct subject—ranging from cultural references to design concepts—translated through a step-by-step drawing and painting approach.

Designed as a progressive curriculum, the class gently builds skills in color theory, design elements, surface texture illusion, and observational sketching. These 2D practices have been shown to directly enhance finesse and intention in pottery—both in form-building and glazing decisions.

More than a journaling class, this is an artistic skill builder that strengthens intuition, deepens visual awareness, and encourages thoughtful, confident creative choices. Ideal for potters looking to expand their surface work, refine their style, and stay connected to a meaningful creative practice beyond the mud.

This is a membership style class to ensure your spot in our progressive curriculum and to embrace a continuity of learning. If spots remain, we may offer open individual class registrations "a la carte" at a higher price.

I spent over 20 years teaching weekly art journaling in a variety of forms with a common motif… human interest topics that expand one’s engagement with the world. This course continues in that style with the additional emphasis on aspects relating to pottery. 

A Supply List with links to purchase my recommended versions will be sent to you upon registration. Supply list will include journal and watercolors among a few other things. My recommendations run about $120. The journal has enough pages for a year or more if only used for this class. You can find less expensive watercolor journals and watercolors than I recommend but results and ease of use will be different.
