Create a "fancy" bird ocarina (whistle type flute) - using Iceman & Colored Slips!

In this member workshop, we will create a working bird-shaped ocarina using Iceman and colored slip. This class blends sculpture, surface design, and sound, a beautiful intersection of form and function.

The bird has long symbolized freedom, hope, perspective, and the soul’s voice across many cultures. In creating a vessel that actually carries breath and produces tone, we lean into that symbolism, shaping not only clay, but sound itself.

You’ll learn:

• How to form a hollow whistle body that produces a clear tone

• The fundamentals of air chamber and mouthpiece construction

• How to sculpt and refine a bird form that feels expressive and balanced

• Techniques for integrating colored slip for pattern, contrast, and layered surface design

Each ocarina will be one-of-a-kind... part sculpture, part instrument, part personal talisman.

This is a focused build session designed for members who love birds and are ready for a playful technical challenge.

Class Info

• Kentucky Mudworks Iceman and custom color slip are included.

• Instruction will lead students to each hand-build their own piece. All levels welcome.

• Member exclusive class!

• One Class... Hand-build piece. These pieces will be constructed with Iceman, colored slip, and clear glazed for final firing. (Glaze may be added if desired) The colored slip body will make this piece fancy!

• Included: all clay, kiln firings, guided instruction.

• Lunch... Bring a bag lunch (refrigerator available), grab take-out, or order in with from a local spot! We will have a 1 hour break for lunch at noon.
