Color Clay 1 Workshop
For Potters Experienced in Handbuilding with Clay.*
Open to ALL Marvelous Mud Pottery Studio (MMPS) Members and EXPERIENCED (Intermediate to Advanced) Non-Member Potters only! Must have experience with basic techniques of coiling, pinching, and slabbing, plus know how to score, slip, and smooth for successful finished pieces.

In three color-filled days, we will dig deep into coloring clay with Mason stains!

Two purchases are required for registration in this Workshop... The Registration Fee plus A Student Supply Kit. Please include both before checking out.
Required Student Supply Kit - Sold Separately
Option 1...3 Color* Student Supply Kit - $100 + tax
- Color Kit of 3 basic colors...red, yellow, blue
- 4 oz containers of each Mason stain color
- 3 Canvas boards for Mason stain chips made in class
- One (4 oz) Squeeze Bottle for Slip
- 30 ml syringe for slip
- Fabric strips for running Mason stain colored clay through pasta roller
- Plastic sample spoons for pigment
Additional Mason Stain colors can be added to order. Only three colors will be mixed in class.
Course Overview...
This course includes a folder of class notes, color ratios for mixing, measurements, and other documentation notating steps in techniques and processes.
Day 1: Sample Swatches & Marbled Nesting Dishes
- Go deep into making sample swatches that blend different ratios of colors together.
- Create swatches for a "Sample Swatch" board that will house your sample tiles once glazed and have them at your fingertips for planning future pieces.
- Learn how to marble a trio of nesting dishes that make fabulously functional pieces to use and get immediate practice in using Mason stain colored clay.
Day 2: Skinner Blends, Laminating, and Caning
- Learn different techniques to use Mason stain colored clay in whimsical and pattern styles when slab rolling
- Use the pasta roller to make beautiful multi-color strips for use in a way that "tricks" the eye.
- Learn basic techniques to design and make canes.
Day 3: Making Colored Slip and Building a Vessel
- Learn how to mix Mason stain colored slip and store it to have on hand for multiple uses.
- Learn valuable tips and tricks for creating with Colored Clay to reduce risk of cracking and produce successful pieces.
- Using the colors mixed, and the canes made in the day prior, create a pot that emphasizes the new techniques learned and results in a fabulously functional piece.
*** Non-members may pay for additional Open Studio time on Sunday, March 1st 9AM-Noon to have more time to complete their project(s). That must be purchased through this link by 4PM Saturday, February 28. A studio assistant will be monitoring and no instruction will be included in this additional time.

- Minimum of 15 lbs of light body clay - MMPS uses Iceman or Kota- Speckled clay is not recommended.

- Personal scale like a kitchen scale that measures in ounces($20)
- Personal pasta roller ($37)
- Small Emulsion blender for stirring liquid slip ($12)
- Face mask - KN 100
- Spray bottle 12 oz ($4)
- Hand Towel
- Fine point sharpie
- 32 oz air tight food grade container for mixed color clay - 1 per color (minimum 3)
- 16 oz air tight food grade container for mixed color slip - 1 per color plus 1 for base clay slip. (minimum 2)

Class fee includes all firing for MMPS members only. If non-members wish to have their pieces fired at MMPS there will be a firing fee. If shipping of finished pieces is desired, shipping fees will be paid by the student. Please contact Rachelle@MarvelousMudPotteryStudio.com for firing prices and estimated shipping fees.
