Color Clay Painting 1.5 Day Workshop
Paint with clay. Build with color. Create a piece worth hanging.
In this playful and technique-rich workshop, we’ll approach clay in an entirely different way… as paint.
Using tinted and shaded color clay, you’ll “paint” a dimensional artwork, layering, blending, and building surface just like a painter, but with the richness and depth that only clay can offer.
Your finished piece can take one of two directions:
• A refined composition designed to be framed
• A whimsical freeform shape, ready to hang straight from the kiln
Either way, you’ll leave with a truly one-of-a-kind piece that lives somewhere between painting and sculpture.
PLEASE NOTE... There is no supply kit for this class and each student should plan on using all of their supplies from Color Clay 1. Mason Stains and clay are not included with this class. It will be up to you to purchase the colors you wish to use in your painting and to use your owl clay. Suggested clay... Iceman
Before the Workshop
You’ll come prepared with a simple concept for your piece. Think of this as planning a painting in 3D. Inspiration might come from a landscape photo, a botanical study, a pattern, or something delightfully whimsical like a sticker or greeting card.
We’ll send guidance ahead of time to help you sketch and simplify your idea so you arrive ready to create.
Day 1
We begin by exploring technique. You’ll create a small sample tile to practice expressive “brushstrokes” using color clay.
From there, you’ll:
• Mix micro-batches to build your personal color palette
• Plan gradients, tones, and transitions
• Decide on your format... framed composition or freeform hanging
• Begin building your piece with guidance on depth, texture, and visual movement
Day 2
With continued demos and individual guidance, you’ll develop your piece further; refining color, enhancing dimension, and bringing your “painting” fully to life in clay.
This workshop is both expressive and intentional… a beautiful blend of planning and play.
