1.5-Day Workshop

Ready to move beyond surface decoration and build with color from the inside out?
Colorworks: Slab, Stack & Slice
Build the pattern. Build the slab. Build the form.
Slab, Stack & Slice explores how to create patterned slabs using Colorworks color clay and base clay together, then turn those slabs into strong, beautifully constructed forms.
Rather than decorating the surface after the fact, you’ll build color directly into the slab itself. We’ll create designed sections of colored clay using ribbons, dots, stacked shapes, pixel-like patterns, and sliced elements, then arrange and integrate them with base clay to create a cohesive “fabric” of clay.
The key is learning how to make all of those individual elements behave as one structurally sound slab. You’ll explore how thickness, moisture, spacing, compression, and construction affect the finished piece, helping prevent the cracking and separation that can occur when different clay sections are combined.
In this playful, hands-on Colorworks workshop, you’ll explore:
• Creating patterned components from Colorworks clay
• Building with ribbons, dots, stacked shapes, sliced elements, and pixel-like patterns
• Combining color clay and base clay successfully within a single slab
• Creating a cohesive “fabric” of clay for slab construction
• Revealing pattern through stacking and slicing
• Planning pattern placement before constructing your form
• Managing moisture, thickness, compression, and joins for successful construction
• Using your finished patterned slabs to create functional or sculptural forms
These techniques give you a versatile new way to think about slab building. Instead of beginning with a plain slab and adding decoration, the slab itself becomes the design.
You’ll finish with two marvelous pieces and a toolbox of Colorworks slab-building techniques you can carry into mugs, bowls, vessels, sculptural forms, and your own future projects.
Experience Level: Open to Marvelous Mud members and experienced non-members who are comfortable with basic clay construction. No previous Colorworks class is required.
