Sculpting Smoke

Member Exclusive Workshop

Create a small-scale ceramic incense smoker where the smoke becomes part of the artwork itself.

In this imaginative one-day workshop, members will design and build a simplified sculptural form that incorporates intentional smoke movement into the piece. Think whales releasing mist from a blowhole, elephants with smoke drifting from their trunks, sleepy bears “snoring,” tiny boats steaming through waves, dragons breathing smoke, mushroom houses with curling chimneys, or whimsical creatures surrounded by atmosphere and mystery.

The focus of this workshop is not highly detailed sculpture, but rather the fascinating balance between simple forms, hidden chambers, airflow pathways, and visual storytelling. You’ll learn how to engineer simple smoke movement through clay while creating a piece that feels playful, atmospheric, and alive once activated.
