The Great Owlology Workshop

There is something ancient and watchful about the owl.

In this immersive 1.5-day workshop, we step into owlology...the art, science, symbolism, and spirit of the owl... and bring it to life in clay.

During our build session, you’ll sculpt a richly detailed owl using handbuilding techniques that allow for expressive posture, layered feather textures, and personality-filled features. Whether your owl is stately and wise, wide-eyed and whimsical, or quietly mysterious, we will focus on form, structure, and surface detail so your sculpture feels alive.

As we build, we’ll explore:

• Fascinating owl facts... anatomy, hunting adaptations, silent flight

• The owl as a symbol of wisdom and intuition

• Cultural meanings from Athena in ancient Greece to Native American traditions and beyond

• The owl in folklore, literature, and personal symbolism

This is more than a sculpture class... it’s a creative deep dive honoring the owl as both creature and archetype.

On Day Two, we’ll refine, add finishing touches, and discuss surface treatments that enhance depth and character. Glazing options and color approaches will be discussed to help your owl reflect its story... earthy and natural, moonlit and mystical, or vibrantly expressive. After the workshop, you will be encouraged to make test tiles and experiment with glazes to capture just the right feel you intend for when your Owl is ready to glaze.

An Owlology Prep Packet will be emailed in advance to get you all revved up and reflective on what kind of Owl you may wish to create.

• Lunch... Bring a bag lunch (refrigerator available), grab take-out, or order in with from a local spot! We will have a 1 hour break for lunch at noon.
