Venture into sculpting and bring 3D life to a human face or simplified bust while exploring how expression is communicated through form. In this focused, immersive workshop, you’ll study the essential features of the face—eyes, nose, mouth, planes, and proportions—and learn how subtle shifts in angle, depth, and placement create emotion and personality.

You may choose to work whimsically, abstractly, or more realistically, developing a face that reflects your own artistic voice. Instruction emphasizes simplified construction methods that make the complexities of human expression approachable and achievable, even if sculpting feels new or intimidating.

Over three days, you’ll build, refine, and bring cohesion to your piece, learning how structure, gesture, and intentional exaggeration (or restraint) can transform a lump of clay into an expressive presence. This workshop is ideal for members looking to deepen sculpting skills, gain confidence with facial features, and expand their visual language in clay.

You will explore:

• Building a face or bust using approachable handbuilding techniques

• Understanding facial planes and proportions without rigidity

• Creating expression through posture, tilt, and feature styling

• Refining surfaces to support mood, character, and intention

• Developing your own interpretation rather than copying realism
