Morean Center for Clay
Saturday, November 7 • Beginning at 10:00 AM

Experience one of the most exciting firing methods in ceramics...the process of Raku firing!

Join us for a members-only adventure at the Morean Center for Clay, where we'll spend the day creating and firing work using the dramatic raku process. Because this event takes place off-site, it will be taught by one of the Morean's experienced raku instructors while we enjoy a full day of learning, firing, and discovering the magic of this unique ceramic tradition together.

Unlike traditional kiln firings, raku pieces are removed from the kiln while glowing hot and placed into combustible materials where flames, smoke, and reduction create stunning metallic flashes, smoky blacks, crackled glazes, and beautifully unpredictable results. Every firing is an event, and every piece tells its own story.

Your raku experience actually begins before firing day. Registrants will receive two dedicated membership classes leading up to the event. During the first class, you'll design and build your pieces with guidance on the forms, sizes, wall thicknesses, and surface treatments that tend to produce the most successful raku results. The second class will focus on applying raku glazes and preparing your work for firing.

*Members who choose to explore horsehair raku instead of glazed raku will have the opportunity during the building class to apply Rachelle's custom-blended terra sigillata, creating a beautifully burnished surface that enhances the dramatic carbon markings produced during the horsehair firing process.

*Please note...  The Raku firing process can be unpredictable due to the stress the clay experiences from thermal shock, and the process encourages beautiful imperfections!

Registration: $175 per person

Your registration includes:

  • Two guided membership classes prior to firing day (building and glazing)

  • Choice of glazed raku or horsehair raku techniques
  • Rental of the Morean Center for Clay raku facilities

  • Instruction by the Morean's raku instructor

  • 8 pounds of clay maximum to make a maximum of 2 pieces.

  • Use of MMPS raku glazes

  • Create one or two pieces and experience multiple raku firings throughout the day. ⭐

Each participant will create up to two pieces from their 8 pounds of clay. We are intentionally limiting both the size and quantity of work so everyone has the opportunity to participate in the three to four kiln loads we'll be firing throughout the day. Our goal is for every participant to experience the excitement of multiple raku firings, not simply to produce a large quantity of work.
